Keep Information about Abortion Safe and Legal
Newer news! On 26 June 1997, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the U.S. Congress violated Americans' rights to free speech by passing the CDA. Here's my favorite quote from the ruling: "In order to deny minors access to potentially harmful speech, the CDA effectively suppresses a large amount of speech that adults have a constitutional right to receive and to address to one another. That burden on adult speech is unacceptable ... " And did we mention that the legislators' mothers dress them funny?
Earlier, a federal court in Philadelphia had already ruled that the CDA was unconstitutional: quoth that court, "Just as the strength of the Internet is chaos, so the strength of our liberty depends upon the chaos and cacophony of the unfettered speech the First Amendment protects."
So this page isn't too illegal after all. But I still think it's important that the information on this page be widely known. Pro-choice resources follow what I originally had to say about the CDA:
The U.S. Congress (the law-making body of the U.S. government) has passed a bill called the Telecommunications Bill, which President Bill Clinton has just signed into law. One part of this Act, the Communications Decency Act, makes it illegal to discuss or provide information related to abortion on the Internet.
You should be upset about this Act. It violates not only a U.S. woman's Supreme-Court-defended right to a safe and legal termination of pregnancy, but it also violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the document which defines how the U.S. government operates and what rights all U.S. citizens hold.
This page can be deemed illegal because it provides access to information about a woman's reproductive freedom. That said, let the illegality begin:
- The Bible
- Emergency Contraception Page (Or call 1-800 584 9911 toll-free in the U.S.)
- Classic literature such as Mary Wollstonecraft's Wrongs of Woman
- Ask Aunt Squishy (Your Internet Sex Advice Columnist)
- The text of the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision
- Pro-Life Shopping Guide and Companies Supporting Pro-abortion organizations
- Planned Parenthood On-Line
- And more specifically, Planned Parenthood's information about abortion
- Abortion Clinics Online
- The Abortion Rights Activist
- Abortion and Reproductive Rights Gopher (WELL)
- Women's Wire
- WHAM! (Women's Health Action & Mobilization)
- Population Action International Gopher
- California Abortion Rights Action League (CARAL)
- The National Organization for Women (NOW)
- List of print books about abortion (Gopher)
- Articles from the English Server, Carnegie Mellon University:
This illegality has been brought to you in protest of the actions of the U.S. Congress and President Clinton. Upset that this information is now illegal to distribute over the Internet? Then get yer butt in gear and contact your members of Congress, who have just violated my -- and your -- constitutionally-protected right to discuss abortion whenever and wherever we please.
You don't have to be a U.S. citizen to register your protest! Even if you aren't a U.S. citizen, this unconstitutional law affects you and what you download, talk about, and see on the Interne
